Risk Statement for Pottery Studio with Children
At Wick & Ceramic, the safety and well-being of everyone who visits or participates in activities at our pottery studio, particularly children, is our highest priority. Pottery activities involve the use of materials, tools, and equipment that can pose risks if not handled correctly. To mitigate these risks, we have established safety protocols and guidelines that are strictly enforced.
Identified Risks and Mitigation Measures:
1. Clay, Glazes, and Chemicals:
• Risk: Skin irritation or accidental ingestion.
• Mitigation: Non-toxic, child-friendly materials are used, and children are instructed to avoid ingesting or touching their faces while working. Handwashing is mandatory after sessions.
2. Tools and Equipment:
• Risk: Cuts, abrasions, or injuries from sharp or heavy tools.
• Mitigation: Children are only allowed to use age-appropriate tools under close supervision. Instructions are given on safe usage of all equipments.
3. Pottery Wheels:
• Risk: Pinched fingers or misuse leading to injury.
• Mitigation: Wheel-throwing activities are closely supervised, with clear demonstrations and step-by-step guidance. Only trained individuals may assist children with wheel operation.
4. Kilns:
• Risk: Burns or exposure to high temperatures.
• Mitigation: Kilns are kept in restricted areas inaccessible to children. Only trained staff are allowed to load, unload, and operate the kiln.
5. Slippery Floors:
• Risk: Slips and falls from water or clay spills.
• Mitigation: Floors are cleaned promptly, and children are advised to wear appropriate non-slip footwear.
6. Allergies or Sensitivities:
• Risk: Allergic reactions to materials or dust inhalation.
• Mitigation: Parents/guardians are asked to inform us of any allergies in advance. The studio is kept well-ventilated, and dust is minimised through regular cleaning.
Supervision and Training:
• All staff working with children are trained in health and safety protocols.
• Staff are experienced in working with children and ensure that proper guidance and supervision are provided at all times.
• We maintain a suitable staff-to-child ratio to ensure every child receives the attention and assistance they need.
Emergency Preparedness:
• First aid kits are available on-site, and at least one staff member trained in first aid is always present during sessions.
• Emergency contact information for parents/guardians is collected and easily accessible.
Parental/Guardian Responsibility:
• Parents/guardians are informed of potential risks and are required to sign a consent form before their child participates in activities.By implementing these measures, we aim to create a safe, enjoyable, and creative environment for children to explore the art of pottery while minimising potential risks.
